I owe so much to Richard McBrien. I met Richard for the first time in 1976 when he presented at the annual conference of the Catholic Religious Education Consultants of Ontario (CRECO). We met in Waterloo, Ontario in the Catholic diocese of Hamilton, and his theme was the Catholic Church. During the planning of the conference a diocesan priest had given the organizing committee copies of Ecclesiam Suam, Pope Paul VI’s encyclical on the Church saying that was all we needed to know, and did not have to bring in some “radical” theologian.
