Reimagining Mary of Nazareth

On Sunday, we heard Luke’s story of the visitation (Lk 1:39-45). In that story Mary rushes to see her cousin Elizabeth after her encounter with the angel Gabriel. She is pregnant. And her pregnant cousin greets her with joyous proclamations. The full account of their meeting is not read on the fourth Sunday of Advent, but anyone who hears it knows what is coming next: Mary’s proclamation of the reign of God where the powerful are brought down, the rich are sent away empty, and the lowly and hungry are lifted up and filled with good things. Here’s my Christmas Reflection Christmas … Christ … Christology … Christian … Christianity. Should we now call this religion so many of us have identified with as “the Christ religion”? I do. I do so intentionally to highlight the fact that this is what it is. I do so also because this religion is losing credence in the modern world.
